Featured techniques:

Modern (Horton):

Horton is one of the major codified modern dance techniques in use today, exemplified by modern dance companies such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. It was developed by choreographer Lester Horton in the 1940s as he strove to “prepare a dancer for any type of dancing he may wish to follow.” Horton dancers are known for their athleticism and clean lines. Class begins with stationary exercises in the center of the room and progresses into travelling combinations across the floor. Initial exercises often focus on strengthening and stretching one muscle group at a time. Movement is performed using all spatial planes and levels (including floorwork). Class is danced barefoot to dynamic percussion tracks designed for each exercise.

Modern (Limón):

Limón is a major style of modern dance developed by choreographer Jose Limón in the 1940s. It lives on today in the Limón Dance Company, which he founded. Limón pulled heavily from his studies under Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, which emphasized weight and breath. The Limón style is characterized by fall and recovery, suspension, opposition, and successional movement of the upper body. Limón dancers are known for their expressive movement quality as they explore the extremes of resisting and yielding to gravity. Class is danced barefoot.
